IPMA Certification in Iceland
Administered by VSF – The Icelandic Project Management Association
VSF is the national certification body for project managers in Iceland, operating under the authorization of the
International Project Management Association (IPMA).
The IPMA Four-Level Certification System (4-L-C) assesses project management competence based on internationally recognized standards.
Certification is available at four levels – A, B, C and D – reflecting increasing degrees of responsibility and complexity in project management.
IPMA Level A – Certified Project Director
For senior professionals responsible for directing very complex projects, programmes, or portfolios with strategic impact.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a responsible leadership role within very complex projects, at least 3 years at a strategic level.
- Evidence of managing projects or programmes of strategic importance.
Assessment methods:
Report, interview, and portfolio of evidence.
IPMA Level B – Certified Senior Project Manager
For experienced project managers leading complex projects.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a project manager, of which at least 3 years in managing complex projects.
- Demonstrated leadership, stakeholder management, and application of professional methods
Assessment methods:
Written exam, project report, and interview.
IPMA Level C – Certified Project Manager
For project managers working independently in moderately complex projects.
Requirements:
- At least 3 years’ experience as a project manager in moderately complex projects.
- Demonstrated understanding of project management processes and application of tools and techniques.
Assessment methods:
Written exam and interview.
IPMA Level D – Certified Project Management Associate
For professionals who understand project management principles and methods and support project teams.
Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge of project management as defined in the IPMA Individual Competence Baseline (ICB4).
- No specific project experience required.
Assessment method:
Written exam.
Application Process
Applications are accepted year-round through VSF’s online application form.
All candidates are required to:
- Submit a completed application form and self-assessment based on the IPMA competence elements
- Provide project descriptions, complexity ratings, CV and other application required documents for each level.
- Participate in assessments as defined for each level.

Recognition and Validity
All certifications are issued by
VSF Certification Body (VSF Vottun)
on behalf of IPMA and are valid for
five years.
Recertification requires demonstration of continued professional development (CPD) and, for Levels A–C, ongoing management practice.
Language
Assessments and documentation are available in
Icelandic or English as follows.
IPMA A : English only
IPMA B: English or Icelandic
IPMA C: English or Icelandic
IPMA D: English or Icelandic
